Raising a Temple: A Mother’s Guide

Over the last twenty years, more than 75,000 parenting books have been published. That is a lot of books on parenting! You can imagine that only a fraction of them come from a Christian perspective. Even though I have only read a few, I have read enough to know that what Lori has to say is both fresh and refreshing. It truly comes from the perspective of parenting to raise children who grow up to be temples of the Holy Spirit—spirit, soul, and body.

In fact, this is a recurring theme in the book. She gives you, the reader, many ideas of how to parent your child’s spirit, soul, and body, which is completely in line with how Scripture says we are made in the image of God. All three areas of your child’s life must be guided to align with Scripture.

I have never heard anyone else talk about it at length, but the reality is that when you are raising one child, you are spiritually raising up to four generations by what you put into the one. This concept originates from Old Testament parenting principles.

Our God is a generational God. He’s the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Abraham was surrounded by pagan cults and raised by a father who worshipped idols. But God chose him to be the father of the Jewish nation specifically because He knew he would raise his son to be a follower of the Most High God, Creator of Heaven and Earth.

He was going against the culture of his time and had never seen anyone else model how to raise a child to follow God. But God recognized he’d be a purposeful parent in spiritual matters. Our heavenly father cares about how we parent our children.

The perspective Lori brings to the table of Kingdom parenting has to become the new wineskin of the Church, along with the new wineskin of children’s ministry. Someone once said that the Church fails the children when it doesn’t teach the parents how to disciple them.
